  • 2.

Then I transferred to California State University Fullerton.

  • 3.

I was able to make important connections that would help me discover my true passions.

  • 4.

I became fluent in sign language and was able to help deaf students and freelanced as a translator.

  • 5.

Graduated from California State University Fullerton and now work at Rio Hondo Community College.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

The noise that I heard through my journey to where I am now was that my major, Anthropology, was one of the worst majors to pursue. It was said that people who pursued this major would not succeed, but I persevered.

  • How I responded:

I pushed forward because it was a subject I loved and respected. I had also made connections with the people who were following the same route as me and together we made it through. Now I am incredibly successful, although my current career may or may not be something that is directly connected to my major. I view my degree almost like a gateway to endless opportunities.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • My parents divorced when I was at a very young age and my mother then went back to school. My mother said that I could do whatever I wanted to do. While this was helpful, I lacked guidance in my future.

  • I had to learn that it was ok to not know things and ask! Even when I felt silly not knowing how to navigate college life.
