My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Before graduating from high school, I applied to Georgia State University and was denied admission. I ended up attending Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) pre-merger with the hope to attend GSU.
2.
Attended GPC and in my second semester, applied to GSU and was denied admissions again based on my high school criteria (I was not applicable yet for Transfer admission).
3.
Finally applied a 3rd time and was accepted as a transfer student. I was pursuing Nursing at the time.
4.
In the 2nd semester of my sophomore year, I applied to GSU's Nursing program and was wait-listed. I spoke with a Career Counselor and decided to change my major to Social Work.
5.
I applied to the Social Work program at AYSPS and was accepted. I had planned to go into Military or Mental Health Social Work - however, in my Junior year - that plan changed.
6.
I graduated from GSU with a Bachelors in Social Work within 4 years and with highest honors - Summa Cum Laude.
7.
I continued my education by attending the University of Georgia to attain my Masters in Clinical Social Work and worked back at GSU in the University Advisement Center as an Academic Advisor for RCB.
8.
As an Academic Advisor for RCB in the UAC, I was able to provide my experience to other students. I left the UAC in 2017 and now work in the construction industry and love what I do.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
College is not meant for you. I also heard that Social Workers are only good at taking children away from their homes.
How I responded:
At the end of the day, networking is important and having flexibility in the opportunities that are available to you. Do not enclose yourself to opportunities simply based on the type of degree you are seeking.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I am the first person in my family to have graduated from high school and to have attended college. My parents are from Central America and never received higher than an elementary school education. However, that was an incredible motivating factor.
