Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

    I became a nurse.

  • 2.

I got an opportunity to go back to school and have it paid for.

  • 3.

I then got my bachelor's degree in psychology at 33.

  • 4.

I figured why stop there. So, I got a master's degree in organizational behavior because I was interested in how learning how to lead and how organizations work would make me a better nurse manager.

  • 5.

At 34, I joined the Air Force Reserves and ended up going active duty during Desert Storm.

  • 6.

I figured that IT was a huge part of how organizations achieved their goals and I should know about it, so I got a masters in information systems.

  • 7.

I figured, go for the doctorate. It was always a dream. I left the Air Force.

  • 8.

I ended up being an academic administrator, lived in Japan for over a decade, taught and shared my experiences as a doctor with students. Now, I'm retired & able to spend more time with students!

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

That I didn't need a doctorate. And, I was foolish to get out of the Air Force just for that.

  • How I responded:

There are those who will not understand your journey because they haven't experienced it. And, there are those that will secretly envy you and wish they had your courage. And there are those who fear you will change. My advice: Don't let anyone else dictate your dreams. They are YOUR dreams. This quote from Natalie Wood became my mantra: "Do what you love. Continue to do it, and it will take you where you want to go." It certainly did for me.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I am a cancer survivor now for 10 years. Getting through it was tough. But, I never once considered that I might not. You can either become a victim or a fighter. I chose the latter.
