Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Friends:

One of my best friends growing up came to my very first show as a solo music artist and said music wasn't for me and I should quit. But that same show I had someone tell me I was like a female Michael Jackson and they wanted my autograph. Perspective.

  • How I responded:

No matter what you do in life there will always be someone on the sidelines trying to critique your life and your decisions. They're just passerbys. You are the only one there for yourself in your life day in and day out. Do what you love for you, because you love it. When you're older you'll look back and regret what you didn't do. Don't let people tell you what you should do with YOUR life. I'm the happiest I've ever been now because I followed my dreams and didn't listen to the naysayers.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • When you're first starting your own business venture, finances will be tight. Budget wisely. Don't spend extra money at the bar or on clothes, I rarely spend money on myself. All my extra funds go to building my jewelry business and music brand.

  • I never struggled with this personally, but I had a rough time in high school hanging with the wrong crowd and getting in trouble with them due to association. Moving out of Virginia and to NYC saved my life and brought me closer to my dreams.
