My road in life has been direct.
I grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut, in a family dedicated to community and public service.
I was the first in my family to attend college—I graduated from Yale University with a double major in history and sociology and then from Columbia Law School with a J.D..
I began my career at an environmental law firm, where a lot of my work involved helping municipalities with economic development while complying with environmental law.
I eventually became chair of the firm’s Natural Resource Practice Group.
After 15 years with the firm, I transitioned into the federal government and joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in its Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds.
I’ve since spent 20 years in federal service and have held various senior positions at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Council on Environmental Quality.
I now serve as Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality, where I advise President Biden on environmental and natural resource policies to protect and improve public health and the environment.
